1987 South Sulawesi. Rambu Solo a Tana Toraja Funeral My bro and I showed up at the airport to catch a plane to Sumbawa, we had been here yesterday to check them out. What we didn’t check was the days they leave, No flight on Tuesday! So now What? Paul looked up at the schedule and says “Hey, what about Sulawesi” We weren’t planning on going there but….. In just a few hours there we were.
The man had been dead for 9 months and it had taken 6 months to build the burial site for the seven day funeral. Everyone that came could say for free, eat for free and drink for free.
It’s along way to heaven and the journey must be taken on the back of a water buffalo. The deceased was very important, so much so Indonesian’s division of OPEK sent an embrasary. We stayed for 3 days and they had already sacrificed 8 water buffalo!
The dead is honored by a carved effigy of them known as Tau-tau. The Tau-tau protects the deceased in the afterlife.
